BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Stratus Comes with T9 Style Keyboard

March 31st, 2010

blackberry_9105 The updated Pearl 9100 has been showing up with a wide variety of keyboard styles. First, it was a SureType keyboard, then a small QWERTY, and now we’re seeing it in a T9 style. Currently, we don’t know much about the BlackBerry 9105, except that it’s rumored to be hitting the European market and Fido. The European market rumor makes a lot of sense as the device has a really European, SMS-centric look to it. Maybe the keyboard stylings are all designated for various carriers and what they believe will sell best. I’m thinking full QWERTY for Verizon, SureType for Fido, and T9 for Europe. We can expect the release date of this phone around the May/June time frame.

How to Fix it Jvm Error Codes for the Blackberry Pearl

March 30th, 2010

Blackberry devices run on the Java Virtual Machine, or JVM, software platform. Occasionally the software will run into a glitch and stop running. These glitches are coded with a three digit number so that testers can figure out what caused the glitch. For users, the error codes almost always mean that the operating system will have to be reinstalled.

    Reloading the software

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of Blackberry Desktop manager from either the Blackberry website or your carrier’s website.

Step 2: Download and install the latest software for the Pearl from your cellular carrier’s website.

Step 3: Connect your device to the computer using the cable that came with the Pearl. If your Pearl has a password you will be asked to enter it now.

Free Themes for BlackBerry Non-Touchscreen

March 29th, 2010

blanktheme Our top pick for free non-touchscreen COMPLETELY Blank by Dannieloco. I came across this theme while browsing the forums, and it’s novel approach snagged my attention. The main feature of the theme? Exactly as the name suggests, it’s a blank homescreen. No icons, no banners, nothing. Don’t let the "Hello Kitty" image above fool you, this will work perfectly with any wallpaper you so choose. If you’re looking to do something a little different to your BB this week, you can give it a go, OTA:download_Now

Twitter for BlackBerry Update: Public Release Date No Longer March 31st

March 29th, 2010

twitterforblackberrybeta Last week we brought word straight from RIM’s Twitter for BlackBerry booth at CTIA that March 31st would ring in public availability of the app. However, today I received the following update from RIM:

The March 31st launch date for the public beta of Twitter was prematurely shared at CTIA. The application will not leave its current limited beta in March. As of right now, the launch date hasn’t been decided and the team is working to make sure the next release is feature-rich and has a great user experience before opening the app to everyone.

So there you have it. Public availability will not be coming this week as we were initially told. I know that kind of sucks, but at the same time it’s not a bad thing if the extra time is going to mean more features and an overall improved user experience. And of course there are lots of great twitter apps out there already (see our Ultimate BlackBerry Twitter Client Roundup) to make the wait easier. We’ll let you know when we have more news on this one.

March 28th, 2010

Capture1_56_400 The Hockey News has announced that they’ll be beefing up their service and offering in-app and text message alerts. The Hockey News app has been available for BlackBerry for a while now, but users looking to get more from the app may wish to sign up for the new VIP service. For $2/month, you can sign up to receive alerts in the THN application during games, where you will receive reminders as pop-up alerts when running the application. Users can also sign up to receive text message alerts if they prefer. Sadly the BlackBerry version won’t include the additional mobile video thats included in the iPhone version (surprise). For more information, check out The Hockey News in BlackBerry App World. Read the full press release after the jump.

How to Maximize the Use of Your Blackberry

March 28th, 2010

Many die-hard BlackBerry smartphone fans cringe at the thought of someone buying a device and not using it to its full potential. It can seem overwhelming when first learning a new device and operating system, especially if using a smartphone for the first time. Fortunately, several online sources will guide you to getting the most out of your BlackBerry.

Step 1: Learn about your BlackBerry device. Download the user manual from, and visit the MyBlackBerry Community while there. Read the tutorials, blogs and forums on, or on the many other Web sites dedicated to BlackBerry smartphones. Before posting a thread, search the site to see if your question has been asked before.

Step 2: Add external memory. Most BlackBerry devices will hold microSD cards of 2 gigabytes and up. Because applications are stored to a BlackBerry’s internal memory, it’s wise to save media files, such as songs and photos, to external, removable memory.
