How to Fix it Jvm Error Codes for the Blackberry Pearl

March 30th, 2010

Blackberry devices run on the Java Virtual Machine, or JVM, software platform. Occasionally the software will run into a glitch and stop running. These glitches are coded with a three digit number so that testers can figure out what caused the glitch. For users, the error codes almost always mean that the operating system will have to be reinstalled.

    Reloading the software

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of Blackberry Desktop manager from either the Blackberry website or your carrier’s website.

Step 2: Download and install the latest software for the Pearl from your cellular carrier’s website.

Step 3: Connect your device to the computer using the cable that came with the Pearl. If your Pearl has a password you will be asked to enter it now.

Step 4: Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager software on your computer. It may immediately recognize that there is an upgrade for your device. If it does hit "update now." If it doesn’t prompt you for an update, select "Application loader" and then hit "start" under the update software portion. If you get to this step and a box comes up asking to choose a connection, skip the rest of these steps and go to section 2 since you have to replace the entire operating system.

Step 5: Choose the version that you want to upgrade to, the latest should always be at the top of the list, and hit "next."

Step 6: Enter your email address, or select "Not at this time." Now hit "next."

Step 7: Hit the "finish" button. The upgrade will now start. It can take up to an hour, so don’t disconnect the device until the computer says that the upgrade is complete. If the device boots up and still has a JVM error, you will need to send it in for service. If the device reboots and is working fine, skip section 2 as your problem has been solved.

Restoring the operating system

Step 1: Disconnect the Pearl from the computer and remove the battery.

Step 2: Open the Blackberry Desktop Software and choose the "application loader" option.

Step 3: Hit the "start" button under the "update software" section. A small white box will appear asking you to connect the device.

Step 4: Plug the Pearl into the computer using the cable that came with the device. Leave the battery out of the device for now. After a second or two the display in the box should change to "USB: UNKNOWN." Hit the "ok" button.

Step 5: Choose the software that you want to load from the list that it gives you. The latest version will be at the top of the list. Hit "next" to continue and the insert the battery into the phone.

Step 6: Hit the "next" button of the following screen and then the "finish" button. Your device will now reload the operating system. It may take up to an hour to complete, so don’t remove your phone until the computer says that the upgrade is done.

Tips & Warnings

Both of these procedures can erase the information on your phone. If you do not already have it backed up when you get the JVM error, your data may already be lost.
