What’s Inside your BlackBerry?

December 31st, 2010

Have you wondered what is inside your BlackBerry? From this video created by the communications company – Kidela Capital Group Inc., you can know some details on what rare earth elements your BlackBerry contains.

A few of these elements are Neodymium, Europium, Terbium and Yttrium, which are essential to create an efficient and ubiquitous communication device, and can help your battery, LCD display, speakers (and more) work the way they do. It is really cool to know that it’s Europium and Terbium making the LCD screen perform in high-resolution (Europium making the color red in the LCD screen, and Terbium making the color green and being responsible for the backlighting in the phone), and Yttrium is used in the camera. Do you know how does your BlackBerry vibrate? It is responsible by Neodymium.

RIM Made an Official Statement on BlackBerry PlayBook Battery Life Rumors

December 31st, 2010

02 Great to see that RIM has stood out to respond to the rumors on the delay of BlackBerry PlayBook due to the poor battery life. They made an official statement, saying:

Any testing or observation of battery life to date by anyone outside of RIM would have been performed using pre-beta units that were built without power management implemented. RIM is on track with its schedule to optimize the BlackBerry PlayBook’s battery life and looks forward to providing customers with a professional grade tablet that offers superior performance with comparable battery life.”

The original rumor came from Kaufman Brothers analyst Shawn Wu, who claimed that PlayBook’s battery life was below up to par when compared with the current tablet market, such as: the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Apple iPad, so the Q1 launch of PlayBook would be delayed to May 2011 to get the issue fixed.

I am glad that RIM released an official statement immediately after the rumor popping up to vote down any negative claims on the launch of PlayBook due to the poor battery performance. Accordingly to the statement, RIM is still on track with its original schedule on the Q1 launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Let’s look forward to it!

Rumors on the Delay of BlackBerry PlayBook

December 29th, 2010

01A couple of weeks ago, RIM wrapped up their BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Webcast series without mentioning battery performance. Recently, we heard rumors that RIM might be delaying the early Q1 launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook due to battery life issues. The rumor comes from Kaufman Brothers analyst, Shaw Wu, who claimed that the delay was due to the poor battery life by comparison with other tablets, such as the iPad that has 10 Hrs worth of battery life, but the BlackBerry PlayBook is said to have “just a few hours” worth of battery life. Shaw Wu said that RIM might delay the launch of PlayBook to May 2011 to get the issue fixed.

Currently, there is still no official word from RIM on this matter. Anyway, we hope that RIM can fix the battery life issue as soon as possible and give us a longer battery life if it is true. What are you thinking? Do you want the PlayBook now? Would it matter if the battery doesn’t last as longer as you suppose? Will the poor battery performance influence your decision on purchasing the PlayBook?

BlackBerry PlayBook Q&A Posted by RIM

December 27th, 2010

PlayBook RIM just wrapped up their BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Webcast series a couple of weeks ago with a big success. Of which, RIM answered some great questions addressed on BlackBerry PlayBook development. Here are some of the most common ones:

Q: What are the SDKs that will be available and when will they be released?
A: The BlackBerry PlayBook OS will support application development in Adobe® AIR®, HTML5 and BlackBerry® WebWorks™, Native C/C++ with support for OpenGL and Java. The Adobe AIR SDK for BlackBerry PlayBook is available today. More details on the availability of SDKs for developing in HTML5, BlackBerry WebWorks, Native and Java will be coming soon.

Q: Is Flash Builder 4 required to build apps?
A: No – in fact, anything that can generate a SWF file can be used to build BlackBerry PlayBook tablet apps. Webcast #2 went through how to use Adobe® Flash® Professional CS5 and we are planning on building a Flash Pro plugin to help developers build apps. The webcast also showed how to use the command line to package an application for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. We also recently released a new version of the SDK which works seamlessly with the preview version of Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 (Burrito) as well.

Q. What types of persistent storage are available on the BlackBerry PlayBook?
A. There are 3 different types of persistent storage on the data:

1. ShareObject – This is the standard AIR SharedObject API used to store limited amounts of data in very quick access memory. Typically, you’ll store variables or other information that you need to access very quickly or frequently in the SharedObject store.

2. SQLite – The standard AIR SQLite API’s can be used to leverage the SQLite database on the device. Generally, you’ll be storing any medium to large sized data in the SQLite database. Since SQLite is in memory, this is typically the best combination between speed and size for data storage.

3. FileIO – The standard AIR File I/O API’s can be used to store data or files in the device memory. Any types of multimedia or images will typically be stored using File I/O. The tradeoff for being able to store essentially any file size is that this is typically the slower of the mechanisms for retrieving stored information from the persistent store, however for any type of media files, this is the recommended approach for storing them on the device.
