July 29th, 2011

RIM has launched BlackBerry Messenger! You can grab it in BlackBerry App World. Recently with every day’s 45 Million users and 2 Million new users, BlackBerry Messenger has become an important and application for RIM. In some senses, we can see that RIM want to make BlackBerry Messenger to the next level into another higher state.

“BBM 6 marks the beginning of an even greater social experience for BlackBerry smartphone users,” said Alistair Mitchell, VP, BBM Platform & Integrated Services at Research In Motion. “It also represents an incredible opportunity for developers to leverage the viral nature of the BBM service and we have already begun working with various developer partners who will be bringing their BBM connected apps to BlackBerry App World this week, offering users highly engaging app experiences.”

Some of the additional functionality users can expect to see with BBM connected applications include the ability to:

  • Share app experiences with friends – When a user discovers a great new BBM connected app, they can instantly let their friends know about it. Users can simply select a BBM contact directly within the BBM connected app they are using.
  • Have a BBM chat within apps -Users can simply pull up their BBM contact list directly from within the BBM connected app and start chatting. For example, the functionality can enable everything from enhanced social game play to collaboration through productivity apps.
  • Discover apps through friends – Users can also discover new apps by viewing the list of apps that are posted to a BBM friend’s profile. They can also click on an app within the list, and instantly download it from BlackBerry App World.

What the Android App Player Means for BlackBerry

July 28th, 2011

As we all know, Android App Player has leaked for a couple of days and BlackBerry PlayBook can support multi-systems… I am sure, if you have a Blackberry PlayBook and know its features, you will try to install Android App Player on Blackberry PlayBook.

Now i would like to share my experience with you. Yesterday, i installed the leaked Android App Player on to my BlackBerry PlayBook. It was an arduous process that involved several hours of researching, finding bad or poorly worded instructions, and downloading hundreds of megabytes worth of SDK’s (note the plural) and a JRE and a JDK and this and that. That’s a lot of work to install a resource-hogging, semi-functional application. Nevertheless I am amazed.

The Android App Player doesn’t just emulate or represent the Android operating system. It is the Android operating system. Android exists as a virtual machine on the PlayBook tablet. Most people don’t run virtual machines on their home computers, let alone a "mere" tablet.

As best i want to say that the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first tablet to run multiple operating systems simultaneously. Apart from that, bringing the Android OS to the PlayBook represents a fundamental shift in the app ecosystem.

News on That RIM Cuts 2,000 Jobs

July 26th, 2011

We just got a hot news which shows today RIM announced it will cut over 2000 employees from their workface and plan to make some management changes. It is said that 2000 will be at the proportion of 10% of the total 19000 employees all over the world. We kind of had a feeling that RIM would be making some cuts but didn’t think it would be this many. Here is what RIM had to say:

“The workforce reduction is believed to be a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company and it follows an extended period of rapid growth within the company whereby the workforce had nearly quadrupled in the last five years alone.”

As far as management goes both Jim Balsille and Mike Lazaridis will keep their CO- CEO status. But RIM has lost RIM lost their Chief Operating Officer Don Morrison due to his retirement and Ryan Bidan to Samsung. And Thorsten Heins is taking on the expanded role of COO, Product and Sales. All product engineering functions, including both hardware and software teams, are being consolidated under Thorsten’s direction. This consolidation of product engineering functions is expected to both produce greater efficiencies and help to accelerate new product introductions in the future.
As part of this broad effort, RIM is reducing its global workforce across all functions by approximately 2,000 employees. The size of this workforce reduction is in line with the preliminary estimate that was factored into RIM’s full year financial guidance on June 16, 2011. Following the completion of the workforce reduction, RIM’s global workforce is expected to be approximately 17,000 people.

Different people have different opinions. Maybe there are more latest news on this, i am sure anyone who likes BlackBerry will care about this issues.

Argentina to start manufacturing BlackBerry smartphones October 2011

July 21st, 2011

Recently RIM has just announced that Brightstar Corporation has been to manufacture new BalckBerry devices in Argentina. So we can know that Malaysia isn’t the only new country that will be producing BlackBerry smartphones. As we all know, Brightstar Corporation is located in Tierra del Fuego and expects to begin manufacturing BlackBerry devices in October 2011 with shipments heading out later that same month.

It is no stranger for Tierra del Fuego to cell phone production. Because it is said that Samsung, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Alcatel, and ZTE all have cell phone production facilities here, and Hewlett-Packard recently announced they will be manufacturing laptops there as well. It is reported that over 5 million cell phones were manufactured in Tierra del Fuego in 2010 and so government forecasts suggest 8 million will be produced in 2011.
