TELUS also announced the Pearl 3G will be priced at $29.99 with a three year contract. We haven’t heard from Bell just yet, but we expect they’ll catch up in a few hours. Regardless this is great news for Canadian customers looking to grab the new Pearl 3G. More details will follow soon…

The new version is 0.7.3, and yet again no changelog is available. We can assume there wasn’t much added and the update most likely just fixed up a few bugs. I really wish Google would get to it and put out some decent updates for both the Gmail app and Google Voice among others, but it seems like wishful thinking on my part. Checks in the supply chain have led the analysts to believe that RIM is ordering an 8.9-inch tablet from Hon Hai Precision (Foxconn) that would be ready to ship by the summer or fall of this year. Whether it would use the BlackBerry OS itself isn’t known, but it may have ad-supported content playback and use both 3G and Wi-Fi to sync with a BlackBerry smartphone.

The note given to CrackBerry doesn’t say much more, and the device may be a companion product rather than a full-fledged tablet. However, it does come just as RIM has bought out QNX, a veteran of embedded OS development that will help make a mystery set of "intelligent peripherals" in the future.

RIM has had a difficult time gaining traction with touchscreen BlackBerry devices so far; it has so far launched just the Storm and Storm2, and both enjoyed early sales rushes only to quickly cool down as newer rivals and traditional BlackBerry models regained favor. Some of the struggle has come from the relative age of the OS compared to Android and iPhone, but issues have also been raised about the intuitiveness of the click-down SurePress screen and the minor updates for the Storm2 versus its 1.5-year-old predecessor.

It’s called Jing Realm-Art Hidden Menu Theme. I love how the GPS and the clock are hidden in the art, and how it looks like the art has a shadow behind it. The description is as follows:

Unique & Best in Art Character Style Themes. Traditional Chinese brush drawing as homescreen, those two characters means our strength is in quietness and trust. Reminding us seeking for peace and wisdom even in busy time.

SVG Art Hidden Menu gives you an ultra view to enjoy the nice homescreen, still with quick accessing shortcut icons.

The art is classic, black and white with grey as well. It’s very simple, yet elegant. The icons are very familiar. The side bar is hidden easily and brought back just with scrolling. If you’re a Buzz user (is anyone actually using it?) you’ll be able to get some more cool features in Google Maps with this new version. You can turn the layer on or off from the standard map, and also have the ability to search by voice and use synchronized starring. The update is a pretty big jump from the previous version, but we’re not sure if any other updates are included in the release. To download the update visit this URL in your phone’s browser: m.google.com/maps from your device.

Recently, Tumblr released the first official version of its Blackberry app, and as a Tumblr user myself, I thought I would give it a review.

First, the visuals. Those familiar with Tumblr’s iPhone app will feel at home. From desaturated blue to light gray, Tumblr’s color scheme looks good on my 9700’s bright screen.

On the main menu, there are the usual options for sending data to Tumblr: Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio and Video, each with icons identical to Tumbr’s web site. Access to each of these menus is accompanied by smooth, wipe transitions. In the upper left-hand corner, users can access their Tumblr dashboards, and in the upper right-hand, settings.

Under each submenu, users will find the option to send the post (upper-right) or cancel it (upper-left). Also, so-called “advanced” features such as tagging and scheduled publishing may be access via a menu at the bottom of the screen.

Posting is simple. For example, to send text, simply give your post a title, type text in the body, then select “post.” If you are half-way through a post and decide to finish it later, just exit the post by pressing the back button and select “Save for later.” A little blue dot will sit on your post to let you know you have a draft saved. Like I said, easy.
Similarly, Photos didn’t present any problems. When a user accesses the Photo section, the user is presented with the option to either “Take a new photo,” or “Choose an existing photo,” and may add captions to the image before uploading.

Under audio, users are given the option to record or select audio then play it back. Once again, no issues.
However, I did have problems uploading video. Similar to uploading audio, users are given the option to record a new video or select one that has already been recorded. Users may then add a title and a description. Unfortunately, I could never actually post a video. After selecting post, the upload would hang for several minutes before presenting me with an error message that the video couldn’t be posted. The two times the video did send, there were error messages whenever I tried to playback the video on my tumblog. I tried both long videos (30 seconds) and short videos (10 seconds). Given that the video sent from the 9700 is .3gp, a mobile video standard, this is strange.

Final opinion: Besides video, I didn’t have any problems using the app. Navigating the menus was intuitive, and the transitions pleasant. Clearly, this polished app is meant to make mobile blogging easy. It’s such a shame about the video though. Without it, I am not sure this app has a place, especially for those with older Blackberrys that are strained for space. Given that, with the exception of long videos, I can do nearly all of the things this app is supposed to do through email, it’s a shame to see that feature broken.

Download the Tumblr app and give it a shot. Did video work for you?
