How To Security Wipe Your BlackBerry

Go to your devices Options screen

Select Security Options

Select Security Wipe

Check each of the options that you would like to be wiped from your device

Enter “blackberry” to confirm device wipe

Click the “Wipe” button

Be Careful!!! This process does exactly what it says it does. Absolutely make sure that you want to do this before you actually do it. Even if you are sure I recommend getting a good backup of your device before running through this process.

BlackBerry themes allow you to adjust the layout and appearance of the icons and applications on the screen. Each BlackBerry comes equipped with several themes. You can also download themes from the Internet for greater variety.

Layout

Step 1: Access the BlackBerry applications screen. An easy way to do this is by pressing the "Menu" button, which is the button to the immediate left of the trackball that has the BlackBerry logo imprinted on it.

Step 2: Select the "Options" icon. This icon is shaped like a wrench. To select it, simply move the trackball until the icon is highlighted and then press the trackball.

Step 3: Select "Theme" from the Options menu. The menu items are sorted alphabetically, so "Theme" is near the bottom.

Step 4: Select your desired theme. BlackBerry defines "theme" as the layout of the icons. You can move the trackball over the icons, and the program will display a preview of the layout in the lower right corner of the screen. When you see the theme that you like, press the track ball to select it. Then press the "back" button, which is the arrow to the right of the trackball. Press "Save" when the prompt asks if you want to save the changes.

Wallpaper

Step 1: Choose a background image you like, which is another part of building a theme. Several websites, such as Crackberry, BlackBerry Cool and BlackBerry Vault offer free wallpaper images (see Resources). You can also use an image that you have photographed using the phone.

Step 2: E-mail a link to the image to the address connected to the BlackBerry. According to BlackBerry Cool, this is the easiest way to get an online image to the phone.

Step 3: Download the image. The phone should automatically save it to the "Media" library.

Step 4: Select the "Media" icon from the application screen. The icon looks like a film reel and a musical note.

Step 5: Highlight the downloaded image and press the "Menu" button to pull up a submenu. From this submenu, you can select the "Set as Home Screen Image" option, which will make the image become the background on the BlackBerry. You have now edited the theme.

Putting music on your BlackBerry Storm is very easy, and you’ll be able to listen to all your favorite tunes on your BlackBerry in no time.

Instructions

Step 1: Connect your BlackBerry to your computer. Plug the small end of a standard mini-USB cord into your Storm, and then plug the large end into a standard USB port. After the BlackBerry is plugged in, a little message will pop up letting you know that the BlackBerry has been connected. If this is your first time connecting your phone to the computer, you may need to install some drivers by clicking on a few prompts.

Step 2: Open your BlackBerry’s internal memory unit by going to "My Computer" and clicking on the BlackBerry Storm icon. You will see a series of files. Locate the one that says "Music" on it.

Step 3: Gather all of the music files that you want and put them in a central folder. Note: Although the BlackBerry Storm can play back most audio formats, including MP3, AAC and WMA, it is not compatible with music that contains Digital Rights Management coding (or DRM), so any music purchased through the iTunes service will not work with your BlackBerry.

Step 4: Drag all the music files that you grouped together over the "Music" folder you found in Step 2. A status window will pop up showing the status of your file transfer. Once this window disappears, your music has been successfully transferred to your BlackBerry, and you can disconnect it.

Most users know that you can easily update your device software by downloading the OS to a PC and using the Application Loader. With some official OS updates, the option to use the Wireless Update will be under Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update. When an update is available, a Wireless Update icon will also be pushed to your device homescreen alerting you of the upgrade, and you will be able to download and install the software over the air (OTA) to your device.

You can see the video Here

The process is fairly simple yet can be very time consuming. The first part of the process involves downloading the software to the device. During this download you may continue to use the device. For the second part of the process, you will install the update and will not be able to use the device at all. This part of the installation can take up to 2 hours to complete. I was lucky and it only took me about an hour total from start to finish. If you’re looking to upgrade via the Wireless Update feature, take a look at the video above for a look at how it all works. I did a little editing to get it under ten minutes so it may seem a little jumpy (and hopefully not too boring, but hey its a boring process) but all the key components are there to guide you so you can get the upgrade done without a hitch.

If you tend to use more applications and data on the phone than average, you may need to charge the phone more often. If you barely touch the phone, you may have to charge it less often. It’s always a good idea to have a wall charger, car charger and a USB/mini USB cable in your home, car or travel case just in case the phone needs to be charged in any situation.

Step 1: Press any key to take your BlackBerry out of standby mode.

Step 2: Enter your security password if you created one.

Step 3: View the battery icon on the homescreen.

Step 4: Determine if the battery needs to be charged. If the battery icon is full then the battery life is at its fullest. If it’s empty and glowing red, then it needs to be charged right away.

Tips & Warnings

Check your phone’s battery icon if you notice the LED on the phone is flashing red or amber.

Blackberry devices run on the Java Virtual Machine, or JVM, software platform. Occasionally the software will run into a glitch and stop running. These glitches are coded with a three digit number so that testers can figure out what caused the glitch. For users, the error codes almost always mean that the operating system will have to be reinstalled.

Reloading the software

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of Blackberry Desktop manager from either the Blackberry website or your carrier’s website.

Step 2: Download and install the latest software for the Pearl from your cellular carrier’s website.

Step 3: Connect your device to the computer using the cable that came with the Pearl. If your Pearl has a password you will be asked to enter it now.

Step 4: Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager software on your computer. It may immediately recognize that there is an upgrade for your device. If it does hit "update now." If it doesn’t prompt you for an update, select "Application loader" and then hit "start" under the update software portion. If you get to this step and a box comes up asking to choose a connection, skip the rest of these steps and go to section 2 since you have to replace the entire operating system.

Step 5: Choose the version that you want to upgrade to, the latest should always be at the top of the list, and hit "next."

Step 6: Enter your email address, or select "Not at this time." Now hit "next."

Step 7: Hit the "finish" button. The upgrade will now start. It can take up to an hour, so don’t disconnect the device until the computer says that the upgrade is complete. If the device boots up and still has a JVM error, you will need to send it in for service. If the device reboots and is working fine, skip section 2 as your problem has been solved.

Restoring the operating system

Step 1: Disconnect the Pearl from the computer and remove the battery.

Step 2: Open the Blackberry Desktop Software and choose the "application loader" option.

Step 3: Hit the "start" button under the "update software" section. A small white box will appear asking you to connect the device.

Step 4: Plug the Pearl into the computer using the cable that came with the device. Leave the battery out of the device for now. After a second or two the display in the box should change to "USB: UNKNOWN." Hit the "ok" button.

Step 5: Choose the software that you want to load from the list that it gives you. The latest version will be at the top of the list. Hit "next" to continue and the insert the battery into the phone.

Step 6: Hit the "next" button of the following screen and then the "finish" button. Your device will now reload the operating system. It may take up to an hour to complete, so don’t remove your phone until the computer says that the upgrade is done.

Tips & Warnings

Both of these procedures can erase the information on your phone. If you do not already have it backed up when you get the JVM error, your data may already be lost.

Many die-hard BlackBerry smartphone fans cringe at the thought of someone buying a device and not using it to its full potential. It can seem overwhelming when first learning a new device and operating system, especially if using a smartphone for the first time. Fortunately, several online sources will guide you to getting the most out of your BlackBerry.

Step 1: Learn about your BlackBerry device. Download the user manual from BlackBerry.com, and visit the MyBlackBerry Community while there. Read the tutorials, blogs and forums on CrackBerry.com, or on the many other Web sites dedicated to BlackBerry smartphones. Before posting a thread, search the site to see if your question has been asked before.

Step 2: Add external memory. Most BlackBerry devices will hold microSD cards of 2 gigabytes and up. Because applications are stored to a BlackBerry’s internal memory, it’s wise to save media files, such as songs and photos, to external, removable memory.

Step 3: Customize your smartphone. The ways to personalize your BlackBerry are limitless. Set your notifications and sound profiles, download themes and ringtones, find wallpapers that make your home screen your own. Because the community of BlackBerry users is so large, most of these can be found free on sites like CrackBerry.com.

Step 4: Take advantage of communication capabilities. BlackBerry devices are known for their many efficient ways to do this, from BlackBerry Messenger, a instant-messaging service, to push e-mail, where other email addresses can be set to instantly push messages to the smartphone. Instant communication ability is one reason the BlackBerry brand is chosen by many business professionals.

Step 5: Download applications for your BlackBerry. Browse BlackBerry App World or ShopCrackBerry.com for apps that provide games and entertainment, enhance productivity and communication, and even offer streaming radio stations from all over the country. Many apps are free or under $10 in 2010.

Step 6: Back up and sync to your PC. Install Desktop Manager software, which comes with every new BlackBerry and also can be downloaded from BlackBerry.com. Desktop Manager allows you to synchronize contacts, calendars and media, as well as back up your device in the event you ever need to restore your data. Connect your smartphone to your PC via the USB cable that came with your device.

Step 7: Update your device’s software periodically. Research In Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry, and wireless providers continually release updates to the BlackBerry operating system to offers owners access to the most current features and performance tweaks. Look for official – not leaked – updates, back up your device first and always follow instructions.

Tips & Warnings

A data plan is required on BlackBerry devices, which is added to your wireless plan. Typically about $30 per month in 2010, the data plan is intended to be in the user’s best interests because a BlackBerry is a data-intensive device.

A BlackBerry is a wireless mobile device created by the company Research in Motion. BlackBerry devices come in various styles and models, including the BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry Storm. These devices vary in their size, features and design, and they are supported by select cell phone service providers.

Keyboard

The most noticeable difference between the Curve and Storm lies in the keyboard feature and set up. The Curve offers the standard QWERTY keyboard, similar to those found on computers and typewriters. The Storm is a touchscreen phone with only four buttons on the device. The four buttons on the Storm, which can also be found on the Curve, are the "Call," "End Call," "Options" and "Return" keys. These keys are the most used on such devices.

Supported Carriers

Most phone carriers make various models exclusive to their network. As of spring 2010, the BlackBerry Storm series is only available through Verizon Wireless, a Code Division Multiple

Access (CDMA) network in the United States. The Blackberry Curve series is offered to various providers on both the CDMA and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. The Curve series (8300, 8500 and 8900), is supported by GSM providers such as T-Mobile and AT&T, and CDMA providers such as Sprint.

Key Features

The BlackBerry is most notable for its email service, called "Push," which comes standard on Storm and Curve phones with a data package. Wi-Fi, which allows users to connect to the internet via open wireless networks, is offered on the Storm2 — the newest Storm model as of Spring 2010 – while the Curve’s Wi-Fi access is more limited, depending on the specific model.
Storms come with both a camera and video recorder. All BlackBerry Curves have a built-in camera; however, the video recorder is only available on some of them. The 8500 does support the video, whereas the 8900 will not. The Storm and Storm2 will also support Bluetooth technology, while the Curve only supports Bluetooth on the 8900, its highest-end model.

Cost

As with most phones, a BlackBerry device’s cost will vary based on the consumer’s current contract and available specials. Contract extensions often give consumers a discount on a new device. The Storm series, being exclusive to Verizon, has a higher cost. As of Spring 2010, the Storm2 costs $99.99 with a new contract, while its full retail price is $539.99. T-Mobile, on the other hand, offers a BlackBerry Curve 8520 for free with a new contract, though its suggested retail price is $279.99.

Size and Weight

The size and weight of the BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry Storm are similar. Both the Storm and the Storm2 measure 4.4 inches tall and 2.4 inches wide. Each weights 5.64 ounces. The Curve’s measurements vary by the series number. The 8500 is the lightest at 3.7 ounces. The 8300 series Curves are the shortest at 4.2 inches tall. The thickness of Curves and Storms is .55 inches.
